History Of The DVD
By the time the war about the video tape and who owned it was fought in the 1980's, technology had already advanced and in 1993, the first copy of the DVD, then called the Digital Videodisk was born.
At first the DVD was invented by two companies at the same time, Philips and Sony that worked together, and Toshiba and JVC that worked together.
In the end they decided to work together and they worked on making the DVD a product to be used by consumers.
In 1995, the first DVD's came on the consumer market. But at that time, most people still owned a video tape player and hadn't even heard of the possibility of a DVD-burning feature or DVD playing feature built into their computer!
The DVD had two different names before it was officially called a DVD. The other names were the previously mentioned Digital Videodisk and Digital Versatile Disk.
However, in the official press release about the DVD, the used name was DVD, and it has always stayed that way.
In the beginning owning a DVD player was one costly business!
The first ever DVD player was manufactured by Panasonic and cost a whopping 1000 US dollars!
Now you can buy them as cheaply as 35 US dollars for a normal DVD player and 100 US dollar for a DVD player with a recording feature in it.
I'm sure you agree with me that in the space of 10 years, the price of a DVD player has lowered tremendously!
